About
I am a female photographer based in Berlin/Germany.
What do you like about photography?
It gets me out of bed on holiday at 5 am, only to take photos in otherwise crowded places (and I’m a night owl normally!).
Seriously, it changed my look on things around me and I walk now through the streets with a totally different viewpoint.
Also: you can buy some of my favourite photos as high quality fine art prints in my shop for your own home!
Where do you publish your photos?
At the moment, my main platform is Instagram and now also here in the menu under Portfolio (see: Fine Art/Minimal, Street Photography, Architecture/Abstract).
In case you wonder where my Instagram name @journalfloral comes from: when I started with photography in 2020, we were not allowed to go outside because of the pandemic. So I searched for indoor ideas and in the first few months I mainly took self-portraits with flowers, coffee or other props. Also, I wanted my Instagram feed to be a diary of my photography journey or a journal. And this combination led to my handle.
But I’m thinking about changing it, because it no longer fits the content on my side.
Tell us more about your photography journey.
My photography journey started in 2020, right after the pandemic hit the world. In the beginning, just a new hobby, but very quickly I got very passionate about it and used nearly every free minute to go outside, watching photography content on YouTube or reading photography blogs.
As I said before, I started with self-portraits with mainly flowers, coffee or other props.
Then I also dabbled in the field of food photography and visually creative photos, but I never liked the time-consuming preparations that came with it.
I became aware of street photography (especially the fine art and minimal theme) through YouTube and Instagram and in 2023 - 3 1/2 years after I held a camera in my hand for the first time - I finally ventured out onto the streets myself.
After a while, I heard about the ‘fishing approach’. So now, when I’m out and about, I’m first looking for scenery (regarding the light, architecture, minimalistic aspects, frames, e.g.) and then waiting for the human element, which at best walks exactly into the frame I've previously chosen. Patience is key here. However, as there are also very lonely places where even the greatest patience is useless, I also put myself in front of the camera and take self-portraits.
And this somehow completes the circle to the beginning of my journey. Sure to say, it’s far from being just a hobby anymore!
Do you prefer shooting in black & white or in colour?
Even if I mainly shoot in black & white these days, that’s sometimes hard to tell! During the editing process, I often notice that I also really like the color version of the photograph and in general I enjoy editing in colour (and the possibilities that come with it) more.
Nevertheless, I publish most of the photos later in black and white because they fit better into the fine art context and the play of light and shadow works better. But because I can't help it,
I often add a colour version as a second image in my posts.
What are your plans for the future?
The publication of this website is a long-planned dream! And with a baby at home, the realization has taken some time, but: here we are. Making my photos (more) visible is the big general aim, be it online or as a print in someone's home. And I would like to share my thoughts, learnings and struggles regarding Street Photography in general, camera gear, being a mother and handling it all, etc. on my blog!
I have many more goals, let’s see what the future brings!
